This project involved using design principals and typography to visually represent the feeling of a haiku into a booklet. I chose a haiku based on weather as I thought it would allow for very interesting symbolism and aesthetics.
Haiku
Tornados and Storms
Next day sunshine and then rain
Today cold and cloudy
Research
My research mostly consisted of understanding the weather I was trying to portray. I went about this by looking at weather and imagining what design elements represent them and a simple point line and shape level.
Sketches
My sketches looked to experiment with multiple different ways in conveying each portion of the Haiku, which was split into three parts that each had their own visual system I hoped to showcase
Tornados and Storms: Hectic, with an almost spiraling motion and drastic variations in size of type.
Next day Sunshine and then Rain: Heavy contrast between dark and light with lines intersecting to represent sun beams and rain drops.
Today Cold and Cloudy: Much softer / rounder forms and light lines and weight to be less aggressive and feel more cold.
When I had a group of sketches that I thought could be expanded on, I would bring them into illustrator tor create digital spreads that you can see below
Final
Finally, the spreads that had the best use of contrast, shape and type were selected to be on the final. A front and back page that fit the aesthetic and combined the visual language of the rest of the pages was created to cohesively combine it all together.
